DMT Academy Lecture: Managing Change in Charities

Alex is an experienced professional consultant with over 25 year in the voluntary and community sector. He specialisies in strategy and change, learning and evaluation, and leadership and development. In his career, he’s worked across the spectrum of role types, from frontline community work to senior executive leadership, and in both delivery and funder organisations.

Originally a frontline youth worker, Alex went on to commission voluntary sector services in the public sector, and then to CEO and director roles in multigenerational and place-based community organisations across social care, arts and culture, and financial inclusion. He also worked as Director of Programmes at a major youth charity, where he oversaw fundraising and business development, and a wide range of delivery programmes including social action, sport, and the arts.

His recent learning and evaluation projects include work with the Henry Smith Charity, Dunhill Medical Trust, Open Age and the Southwark Law Centre. He has also led the Vivensa Foundation’s capacity development and leadership learning programme for community organisations, as part of the Moore Kingston Smith team. His strategy work includes extensive and long term work with a range of national and local organisations of all sizes including funders and delivery charities in a wide range of subsectors.

Alongside his consulting and leadership experience, Alex has a strong academic and research background. He holds a PhD, has taught and published as an academic, and specialises in qualitative research on social issues.

Alex is also the author of Barely Civil Society, a widely read blog featuring essays exploring the politics, practice and future of the voluntary sector.
